The Ol Doinyo Orok Mountain also called Namanga hills is situated approximately 170km from Nairobi in southern Kenya in Namanga town. It is one of the few remaining forest patches in Kenya that contains a large variety of plants, herbs and also several animal species. In the mountain valleys, there are natural water catchments created by the high altitude rains. One of the highest peaks is 2548 m. The hike The hike is Modarate and is between 4 to 6 hours. Attractions We shall explore the lush green nature trails, enjoy watching a variety of migratory and endemic birds. At some places higher up, the trail opens up into clearings from where views of Mt Longido and Mt Kilimanjaro are sights to behold. You may also get lucky and spot some of the local game like, various antelope species, dik dik and monkeys. The mountain is so picturesque and we will get a splendid opportunity to take memorable photos.
How to Prepare for the Hike
- Engage in active cardio exercises such as aerobics, walking, running, cycling, and swimming among others the week prior to the event.
- Set aside the day before the hike for resting–take a break from exercises.
- Set your mind up for conquering yourself. Hiking is more about your mindset than physical preparation. Once you win the battle in your mind, everything else contributes less than 10%. You can do it!
- Increase your hydration at least two days to the hike.
- Have a generous breakfast at least 3 hours before the start of the hike. This ensures that most of the food has been digested by the time you begin the hike, giving you the much- needed energy while ensuring your stomach is not too full for comfort.
- Purpose to get enough rest the night before the hike.
- If on intermittent fasting or on a diet, take a break in the period one day before and after the hike. This way, you will build up your energy reserves for the arduous task ahead.
